While we were at Berg's Congress 2015, we had the privilege to meet the incredible Felipe Lira who has been attending Berg's since the age of 9!

Jessica Carro ran this one in two languages at once, asking in English for the camera and in Portuguese for Felipe, then translating his answers back on the spot. Felipe was nineteen. Here is the conversation, cleaned up for reading.

We're here with Felipe Lira. He's been dancing since he was nine. His mother is a dance teacher.

What's your mother's name?

Patrícia Lira.

Patrícia Lira is his mother, and he's been coming to these congresses since he was nine. Berg was the one who told me I needed to interview him. He told me how when Felipe was little he would sit on the bench and his feet wouldn't even touch the ground, and that's when he started coming. So he pretty much grew up at these congresses. And he's a champion too.

You've been coming here since you were nine, so you've lived all of it. How have you seen the congress change? Can you tell us a bit of that story, since you've been here from the beginning?

Sure. When I first came I was nine. I wasn't dancing yet, I started dancing at ten. And I can see that the congress has evolved, the structure has evolved. What hasn't changed is the passion of the people who come here.

I see people from Japan, from Australia, from places that are so far away, and when they arrive, the shine, the magic of this place, it changes everyone's life. For those of us who are used to coming every year, and for the ones here for the first time, it's fantastic.

Tell us about the competitions you've won. I know you've done several. Where did you dance?

I was champion here, which is the World Championship in Porto Seguro, and in Argentina, which is the South American. I won my first championship at seventeen, in the professional category, and that one was here. The second was in Argentina, the South American, and I was eighteen. I was also runner up in salsa, in São Paulo.

The salsa one, was that here or in Buenos Aires?

In São Paulo.

And I know you have a twin brother. Can you tell us about him? Does he dance too? I know you dance with your mother. Tell us a little about you, your brother, your mother, your relationship, and how it works to dance together.

We started dancing without pressure, without anyone pushing us. When we turned ten we joined a school just for young people and did a year of classes. Salsa, samba, cha cha, tango, everything. Jazz. And boom, nobody had ever seen anything like it.

Dance for us is family. It's something that has been there since I was little. I heard it going to sleep, I heard it waking up, I watched her train. So it's family to me. It's tied to family.

And your brother too? You both started together?

We started together.

Where do you see your future in dance? What do you have planned for your career, what are you thinking of doing now? You're young, nineteen, you still have plenty of time.

For four years now I've been teaching regular classes at one of the biggest schools in São Paulo, with my mother. And this year we're doing a tour in Europe, starting in Moscow. We plan to be away for three months. With Marcelo. So we're taking three months to give workshops and do shows in each place.

Three months. You and your mother?

Me, my mother and my brother.

And your brother's name?

Rodrigo. Rodrigo Lira.

When do you leave?

June. The fifteenth of June.

A Patrícia Lira é a mãe dele, e ele vem a esses congressos desde os nove anos. Foi o Berg que me disse que eu precisava entrevistá-lo. Ele me contou que quando o Felipe era pequeno, sentava no banco e os pés nem alcançavam o chão, e foi aí que ele começou a vir. Então ele praticamente cresceu nesses congressos. E ainda é campeão.

Você vem aqui desde os nove anos. Então, como é pra você ver tudo isso, ver como o congresso vai mudando, como vai evoluindo? Você pode contar pra gente um pouquinho dessa história, já que você tá aqui desde o começo?

Claro. Quando eu vim eu tinha nove anos, não dançava ainda, comecei a dançar a partir dos dez anos. E eu percebo que o congresso evoluiu, a estrutura evoluiu. O que não mudou é a paixão das pessoas que vêm pra cá.

Eu vejo pessoas do Japão, da Austrália, de lugares super longe, e quando eles chegam aqui, o brilho, a magia que é esse lugar, muda a vida de todo mundo. A gente que já tá acostumado a vir todo ano, e os primeiros participantes, é fantástico.

Queria te perguntar sobre as competições que você ganhou. Sei que você fez várias. Conta pra gente onde você dançou.

Eu fui campeão aqui, que é o Campeonato Mundial em Porto Seguro, e na Argentina, que é o Sul-Americano. O meu primeiro campeonato eu ganhei com dezessete anos, categoria profissional, que foi aqui. E o segundo, que foi na Argentina, o Sul-Americano, eu tinha dezoito anos. E fui vice-campeão de salsa também, em São Paulo.

A de salsa foi aqui ou em Buenos Aires?

Em São Paulo.

E eu sei que você tem um irmão gêmeo. Conta pra nós um pouquinho do seu irmão gêmeo, da sua mãe, da sua relação, como vocês dançam juntos. Conta um pouquinho pra gente essa história de vocês.

A gente começou a dançar, na verdade, sem pressão, sem cobrança. E quando fizemos dez anos, entramos numa escola só pra jovens e fizemos um ano de aula. De salsa, samba, cha cha, tango, tudo. Jazz. E boom, assim, ninguém nunca tinha visto.

E a dança pra gente é familiar, é algo que vem desde que eu era pequeno. Ouvia pra dormir, ouvia pra acordar, via ela treinar. Então é família pra mim, tá ligado à família.

E seu irmão também? Os dois começaram juntos?

Começamos juntos.

Onde você vê o seu futuro dançando? O que você tem planejado pro seu futuro e pra sua carreira de dança? O que você pensa fazer agora? Você é jovem, dezenove anos, tem um montão de tempo ainda.

Tem quatro anos que eu tenho aulas regulares numa das maiores escolas que tem em São Paulo, com a minha mãe. E esse ano a gente vai fazer uma turnê na Europa, começando em Moscou. Então a gente pretende ficar três meses fora. Com o Marcelo. Então a gente vai pegar três meses pra em cada lugarzinho dar workshop e fazer show.

Três meses, você e sua mãe?

Eu, minha mãe e meu irmão.

E o seu irmão é?

Rodrigo. Rodrigo Lira.

Quando que você vai começar a viajar?

Junho. Quinze de junho.
