Have you ever felt that the more you learn, the less you enjoy dancing?

Lately, I've been going through a very interesting process with my Zouk.

I like to compare my relationship with dance to a marriage. At first, there's the excitement of discovering someone new. But a long-lasting relationship isn't sustained by passion alone. There are days when showing up has nothing to do with feeling inspired. Sometimes it's just habit. Sometimes it's necessity. It's the decision to build something bigger than yourself.

That's why, when I first discovered Zouk and the pleasure I found in dancing and learning it, I made a very conscious decision: Zouk would be my lover.

    But life had other plans.

Zouk gradually became part of my work. Our relationship grew more serious. Sometimes I even feel like I've divorced my former spouse, and Zouk has become my primary relationship.

I have intensively lived and breathed Zouk for the past year, and now, I'm starting to feel the weight of that.

Part of me doesn't enjoy dancing the way I used to. Going to a social or spending an entire weekend at a festival takes a lot of energy, and sometimes I feel like it doesn't give me back what it once did.

The strange thing is that I don't think I dance worse. If anything, I probably dance better than ever. But I also know much more now, which means my mind is far more present.

    Am I enjoying this?

    Is my partner enjoying this?

    Am I following well?

Weight transfer. Posture. Lines. Hips. Chest. Head movement. Shoulders.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, again:

    Am I enjoying this?

Then I remember how it all started 7 years ago…

The first time I saw my teacher, Camila, dancing with an experienced leader, I was completely captivated. I started taking classes, and just two months later, she told us we "had" to go to a festival: ZoukMX.

    I couldn't even do a bonus.

And yet, the dances I had that weekend are still among the best I've ever experienced.

    Why?

    Probably because I didn't know that I didn't know.

I've been through this process in other dance styles, so I know it's a part of learning. At some point, the mind has to step in, organize all the new information, and gradually hand it back to the body. Eventually, you stop thinking so much, and movement begins to feel natural again.

But I feel like I've been stuck in that in-between stage for quite a while now, and I still haven't found that same sense of pleasure I felt in the beginning.

I've had fun dances. I've had smooth dances. But very few that felt truly pleasurable.

And it makes me wonder how other dancers in our community navigate this stage.

When socials, festivals, and the dance in general begin to feel more like work than play, how do you recover the passion again? Because I feel the love is still there.

How do you turn your life partner back into your lover?
