In late October, while most of the zouk world is packing away its summer festivals, a ballroom two blocks from Waikīkī beach will fill with dancers. Five days, October 22 to 26, at the beachfront Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort. Three full days of workshops, day and night parties, an official BZDC Jack & Jill, and the things no mainland festival can promise: fire dance, hula, a pool party, fireworks over the Pacific.

It's called Hawai'i Zouk Wave, and the person building it is not who you'd expect. Or maybe exactly who you'd expect, once you hear her story.

Her name is Lexi. On paper: professional fire dance performance artist, event producer with more than a decade in the industry, choreographer, professional makeup artist, new community Brazilian Zouk instructor. In person, by her own description: someone whose job, whatever tool is in her hand, is helping people find their sparks.

The international lineup she's flying to the middle of the Pacific is serious: Ana, DJ Kakah, Felipe Ihara & Bruna Manika, Bruna Peçanha, Kuna, Adayl Iost, Nhat & Gigi, Brad Meccia, alongside Hawai'i's own teachers, performers, and the Honolulu zouk community that has kept the islands dancing.

And here's the part of the story we didn't know until we asked: this is not Hawai'i's first zouk festival. There were editions in 2018 and 2019. Lexi helped organize the second one. Then the wave went quiet. What's happening in October is a return.

We sent her our questions. Her answers, lightly edited for length, read the way the festival sounds.

For dancers who haven't met you yet: who is Lexi? Fire dancer, event producer, choreographer, makeup artist: how do all those lives fit together?

I am a creator who lives at the intersection of movement, visual art, and community atmosphere. While "fire dancer," "event producer," "choreographer," and "makeup artist" might sound like entirely separate lives, they are actually just different tools used to build the exact same thing: a transformative experience.

My work in makeup artistry is about calling forth a person's inner confidence, magic, and presence. Through my movement world — spanning aerials, Zouk, fire dance, and flow arts — I take that same magic and physically express it. As a choreographer and event producer, I scale those visual and movement arts up to curate immersive environments. Every discipline I practice makes the others stronger.

Ultimately, whether I am holding a makeup brush, a fire prop, or a production clipboard, my mission is one and the same: to help people find their sparks, inspire artistic freedom, cultivate deep connection, and create a container where magic can be felt and experienced — whether it is at low tide or on a big high wave.

When did Brazilian Zouk find you, and when did it stop being "a dance class" and become YOUR dance?

Brazilian Zouk found me on Oahu in 2016, right when my life was starting to spiral into darkness and hardship. In that challenging season, it quickly became much more than just a dance class; it became my sanctuary.

The moment it truly transformed into my dance was when I began traveling the world to different festivals and events. The ultimate turning point was my two-month immersion in Rio de Janeiro. Standing in the birthplace of Zouk, everything shifted. It stopped being about memorizing steps or techniques and became a deep awakening and awareness. Zouk kept showing me reflections and wonder — a total journey going inward.

That profound healing and inspiration are exactly what sparked my passion to bring that same magical energy back home — fueling the creation of Hawai'i Zouk Wave.

When did "someone should make a zouk festival in Hawaii" turn into "I am making it"?

The seed was planted in 2019 while basking in the sun in Rio de Janeiro. Navigating local dance studios and events, the tropical energy reminded me of Hawai'i every single day. Traveling through Europe's festivals added the critical building blocks to that vision.

While the seed was planted early, it took years to sprout. Whenever I worked at a big event, this voice would come out in my head: "what if we have a zouk event here?" The urge became an unstoppable pull when I finally discovered a venue combination that perfectly matched both my creative vision and my financial plan. Beyond finding the right opportunity, it was a matter of personal timing — I had survived my hardest chapters, built resilience, and packed over a decade of solid event-industry experience into my tool belt. I was finally ready.

As for the history: no, Hawai'i Zouk Wave is not the first Zouk festival held in Hawaii — it is a powerful continuation of our island's history. Two previous festivals took place in 2018 and 2019, and I actually assisted with organizing the 2019 edition. Teaching and organizing during that early history gave me the foundation I needed to step up, take the lead, and bring this grand new vision to life.

Your site calls the festival "a soulful sanctuary created with professional care, deep purpose, passion and love." What will feel different the moment someone walks in?

Working in the background as an event professional on an island that hosts countless productions every single day, I know exactly what it takes to execute a beautiful experience. But more importantly, my supporting team and I are avid event attendees ourselves. We know firsthand what it feels like to travel far, spend money, and end up in a rushed, sterile environment.

That is why we realize the island has something unique to offer. The moment you walk into Hawai'i Zouk Wave, you will instantly feel a complete shift in energy. I'm excited to give back to the community and create a special experience for us to come together and dance in a special place.

Fire dance, hula, a pool party, fireworks: how are you weaving Hawai'i itself into the festival, and what matters to you about doing that with respect for the culture?

For my team and me, respect isn't an event checklist — it is how we live every single day in harmony with the ʻāina (land), the wildlife, and our ʻohana. We are deeply conscious of what we bring to Hawai'i and what we take from it. We are weaving Hawai'i into the festival by immersing our guests in the authentic island life that already exists here. Just as the land naturally bridges all the elements, our event serves as a bridge connecting our dancers and communities.

We collaborate with local artists and cultural practitioners to ensure everything is shared authentically and with deep awareness. When our attendees witness the fire dance or hula, they aren't just watching a show; they are being invited to learn the history and storytelling behind the movement. Even the pool party and fireworks are a celebration of the island's natural elements of water and sky.

It is a conscious, transcending experience to remember for a lifetime.

Pessoalmente, na descrição dela mesma: alguém cujo trabalho, seja qual for a ferramenta na mão, é ajudar as pessoas a encontrarem suas faíscas.

Para quem ainda não te conhece: quem é a Lexi? Fire dancer, produtora de eventos, coreógrafa, maquiadora: como todas essas vidas se encaixam?

Eu sou uma criadora que vive na interseção entre movimento, arte visual e atmosfera de comunidade. "Fire dancer", "produtora de eventos", "coreógrafa" e "maquiadora" podem soar como vidas completamente separadas, mas na verdade são apenas ferramentas diferentes usadas para construir exatamente a mesma coisa: uma experiência transformadora.

Meu trabalho com maquiagem é sobre despertar a confiança interior, a magia e a presença de uma pessoa. No meu mundo do movimento — que passa por aéreos, Zouk, fire dance e flow arts — eu pego essa mesma magia e a expresso fisicamente. Como coreógrafa e produtora, eu amplio essas artes para curar ambientes imersivos. Cada disciplina que eu pratico fortalece as outras.

No fim das contas, esteja eu segurando um pincel de maquiagem, um adereço de fogo ou uma prancheta de produção, minha missão é uma só: ajudar as pessoas a encontrarem suas faíscas, inspirar liberdade artística, cultivar conexão profunda e criar um espaço onde a magia possa ser sentida e vivida — seja na maré baixa, seja no topo de uma onda gigante.

Quando o Zouk Brasileiro te encontrou, e quando ele deixou de ser "uma aula de dança" e virou a SUA dança?

O Zouk Brasileiro me encontrou em Oahu, em 2016, bem quando a minha vida começava a mergulhar em escuridão e dificuldade. Naquela temporada desafiadora, ele rapidamente se tornou muito mais do que uma aula: virou o meu santuário.

O momento em que ele realmente se transformou na minha dança foi quando comecei a viajar o mundo por festivais e eventos. O ponto de virada definitivo foi a minha imersão de dois meses no Rio de Janeiro. De pé no berço do Zouk, tudo mudou. Deixou de ser sobre memorizar passos e técnicas e virou um despertar profundo. O Zouk não parava de me mostrar reflexos e encantamento — uma jornada inteira para dentro.

Essa cura e essa inspiração profundas são exatamente o que acendeu a minha paixão de levar essa mesma energia mágica de volta para casa — alimentando a criação do Hawai'i Zouk Wave.

Quando o "alguém devia fazer um festival de zouk no Havaí" virou "eu vou fazer"?

A semente foi plantada em 2019, tomando sol no Rio de Janeiro. Circulando pelas escolas de dança e eventos locais, a energia tropical me lembrava do Havaí todos os dias. Viajar pelos festivais da Europa acrescentou os blocos que faltavam para essa visão.

A semente veio cedo, mas levou anos para brotar. Sempre que eu trabalhava em um evento grande, uma voz aparecia na minha cabeça: "e se a gente fizesse um evento de zouk aqui?" A vontade virou uma força imparável quando eu finalmente descobri uma combinação de espaços que casava perfeitamente com a minha visão criativa e com o meu plano financeiro. Além da oportunidade certa, era uma questão de timing pessoal — eu tinha sobrevivido aos meus capítulos mais difíceis, construído resiliência e acumulado mais de uma década de experiência sólida na indústria de eventos. Eu finalmente estava pronta.

Sobre a história: não, o Hawai'i Zouk Wave não é o primeiro festival de Zouk do Havaí — ele é uma poderosa continuação da história da nossa ilha. Dois festivais aconteceram, em 2018 e 2019, e eu ajudei na organização da edição de 2019. Ensinar e organizar naquela história inicial me deu a base que eu precisava para assumir a frente e dar vida a essa nova visão.

O site chama o festival de "um santuário de alma, criado com cuidado profissional, propósito profundo, paixão e amor." O que vai ser diferente no momento em que alguém entrar?

Trabalhando nos bastidores como profissional de eventos em uma ilha que recebe incontáveis produções todos os dias, eu sei exatamente o que é preciso para executar uma experiência bonita. Mas, mais importante: minha equipe e eu somos frequentadores assíduos de eventos. Nós sabemos na pele o que é viajar para longe, gastar dinheiro e cair em um ambiente apressado e sem alma.

É por isso que sabemos que a ilha tem algo único a oferecer. No momento em que você entrar no Hawai'i Zouk Wave, vai sentir na hora uma mudança completa de energia. Estou animada para devolver à comunidade e criar uma experiência especial para dançarmos juntos em um lugar especial.

Fire dance, hula, pool party, fogos: como você está tecendo o próprio Havaí dentro do festival, e o que importa para você ao fazer isso com respeito à cultura?

Para mim e para a minha equipe, respeito não é um checklist de evento — é como vivemos todos os dias, em harmonia com a ʻāina (a terra), a vida selvagem e a nossa ʻohana (família). Somos profundamente conscientes do que trazemos para o Havaí e do que tiramos dele. Estamos tecendo o Havaí no festival ao imergir nossos convidados na vida autêntica da ilha que já existe aqui. Assim como a terra naturalmente conecta todos os elementos, o nosso evento serve de ponte entre dançarinos e comunidades.

Colaboramos com artistas locais e praticantes culturais para garantir que tudo seja compartilhado de forma autêntica e com profunda consciência. Quando nossos participantes assistem ao fire dance ou à hula, eles não estão só vendo um show; estão sendo convidados a aprender a história e a narrativa por trás do movimento. Até a pool party e os fogos são uma celebração dos elementos naturais da ilha: a água e o céu.
